Any Tai Tamariki interested in sustainable native forestry?

Opportunities to learn by volunteering are coming up.

 Practical tasks include:

·         Surveying the areas of native forest – measuring trees in sample plots for a Sustainable Forest Management (SFM Plan).

·         Selecting and measuring potential harvest trees for an Annual Logging Plan (ALP)

·         Observing selective harvests in action.

·         Portable sawmilling.

What’s involved?

These tasks will be undertaken over the next few weeks/month or so. Anyone wanting exposure to this type of work and sustainable native forest management, may volunteer their help for 1day, or several days, during any of these operational tasks.

Generally, a whole day will be involved. You would need to register your interest, bring a lunch, drink, raincoat, and sturdy footwear. Work involves using tape measures, identifying tree species, recording measurements, data entry, and marking trees for felling, and handling sawn tōtara timber. A good level of fitness and positive attitude is required.

Where is it?

Mostly on properties in the Oromahoe area.

Who can participate?

Anyone 15 years and older, who is keen to learn and to help.

Why should they want to?

There is potential to build a new regional industry in Te Tai Tokerau, based on the sustainable management of regenerating tōtara forests – for multiple values. Though presently, this is only in its very early trial stages. However, alternative, low -impact environmental forestry practice (such as this style of continuous cover forestry) is also increasingly becoming relevant to commercial forestry in Aotearoa – especially in erosion-prone areas. Building awareness, skills and capacity may be of value to those interested in developing more ecological forestry options for the future.

When?

These activities are being planned for the next few weeks, and beyond. Those interested in participating should contact Paul Quinlan (Ph. 021 1478 279 or email: pdq@pqla.co.nz) and make your availability known. Weekend work may be an option too. Flexibility to allow for weather also necessary.
