Kiwi’s on the Whenua

We’ve received some great news about the health of our whenua – our kiwi population love it here!

Seven Sites, Seven Successes

On one night of recording, monitoring devices were placed at seven sites across the farm to capture kiwi calls at night. The results show kiwi were heard at every single site, with call rates ranging from 2.7 to 12 calls per hour. Four of the sites recorded 5 calls or more per hour, which is considered high kiwi activity. All seven sites also picked up male and female duets, confirming breeding pairs are present across the whenua.

Mahi, Whanau, and Neighbours: A Shared Effort

These results are the outcome of steady mahi over the last three years, made possible by the dedication of many groups working together. Our staff, hapū, other landowners, and local community groups as well as Kiwi Coast and the Northland Regional Council have all played a vital role. A big mihi also goes to Tina from TJ Pest Termination, who has checked our traps, laid bait and recorded data from our traps diligently every fortnight. Through shared effort, we’re ensuring kiwi have a safe and thriving home on our whenua.

Healthy Kiwi, Healthy Whenua, Healthy Community

Hearing kiwi across all sites is a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when we care for the whenua. Healthy kiwi mean healthy land, and healthy land supports the wellbeing of our whanau and community. We are happy that these treasured taonga have a safe spot to live and breed and will be around for many years to come.
