The Oromahoe 18R2B2B2 Trust is proud to announce that we have been awarded $25,000 from the Northland Regional Council’s Climate Resilient Communities Fund for our water feasibility study, Te Wai Ora, Te Whenua Ora: Oromahoe Water Feasibility Study. This funding is part of a wider $600,000 investment supporting 22 projects across Northland, with a focus on strengthening food and water security, renewable energy, and nature-based solutions to address climate change. Our feasibility study aims to assess the potential for reinstating our existing bores, accessing surface and groundwater, and developing a sustainable water supply for our community, marae, and potential horticultural projects.

Key Findings from Stage 1

The first stage of the study has provided promising results. A hydrologist has conducted a comprehensive assessment of our land and water resources, identifying potential options for securing a reliable water source. Key findings include:

• Groundwater Feasibility – Initial assessments indicate potential for groundwater extraction, based on the location of the land and the geological makeup, but further hydrogeological studies and testing are needed to confirm water quality and availability.

• Community Water Demand – To meet the needs of local homes and the marae, an estimated 10,400 m³ of water per year would be required.

• Water Treatment Considerations – Any extracted water would require treatment to meet drinking water standards, and a dedicated person may be needed to oversee water safety compliance.

• Soil and Land Suitability – Soil assessments have identified two key areas suitable for horticultural development based on water proximity, soil type, and topography.

Next Steps: Stage 2

• With the study now at its halfway point, we are moving into Stage 2, which will focus on high-level cost estimates for the different water supply options.

• The first step is to identify a location for drilling a pilot bore adjacent to Porotu Road. This will be based on geological suitability, with the option of a geophysical resistivity survey to refine site selection. Subsequent stages will depend on drilling results.

• Surface water supply will be investigated for both sites identified as suitable for horticulture along with groundwater takes if surface water is unavailable.

• Regulatory considerations, conceptual plans for drinking water and horticultural supply, and indicative irrigation requirements with be investigated and costed.

This process requires careful planning and due diligence, but we remain committed to securing a long-term, sustainable water solution for our whenua and whānau.

We acknowledge the Northland Regional Council for supporting this mahi. If you have any questions or feedback, please reach out to us. We will continue to provide updates as we move towards a resilient and self-sustaining future for Oromahoe.
